President Buhari’s United States Visit Will Cost Nigeria.See more

President Muhammadu Buhari will be visiting Washington D.C, the US capital for his meeting with President Barack Obama next week, Monday with an announced 32-man delegation and unannounced aides numbering an average of 10 that would be accompanying governors, ex-governors, State House officials and businessmen.
This will bring the total number of Nigerians on this visit with President Buhari to about 229, being the biggest Presidential delegation in Nigerian democratic history. This contingent will cost Nigeria about N2.2billion from the virtually empty Treasury.
The Presidency have earlier announced that those expected to join the President on the visit include Governors Kashim Shettima (Borno), Rochas Okorocha (Imo), Adams Oshiomhole (Edo), Tanko Al-Makura (Nasarawa) and Abiola Ajimobi (Oyo) Each with 15 aids.
The rather large delegation will also have former Rivers State Governor Chibuike Amaechi; Buhari’s running mate in the 2011 presidential election, Pastor Tunde Bakare; former President of the Newspapers Proprietors’ Association of Nigeria (NPAN) and publisher of The Democrat, Ismaila Isa Funtua; a former Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazzau; and Halilu Sheni, a businessman.
Others in the delegation will include officials in the presidency and some heads of government parastatals.
Apart from the number about about 10 government officials have already left for the United States in what they claimed is preparing grounds for the Visit.

Buhari wants to imprison Jonathan, Niger Delta group

A civil rights organisation, Vanguards of Nigeria’s Democracy, on Saturday raised the alarm over alleged moves by President Muhammadu Buhari to “investigate, malign and imprison” ex-President Goodluck Jonathan on trumped-up charges.
The group accused the President and his All Progressives Congress-led administration of anti-Niger Delta tendencies.
The group referred to the ongoing controversy between a former Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole over Excess Crude Account and allegations as a ploy to get at former President Goodluck Jonathan.

But the Special Adviser to the President (Media and Publicity), Mr. Femi Adesina, described the allegation by the group as mere speculation.
Adesina asked why people would dwell on speculations when nothing concrete has been established against former President Jonathan.
He said, “All these are speculations and I cannot react to speculations because there is nothing concrete yet against the former President.”
The spokesperson of VND, Mr. Osaghae Ogiemudia, in a statement obtained by SUNDAY PUNCH in Abuja, also claimed that anti-Niger Delta and anti-Ijaw posturing of the APC-led government of Buhari has been demonstrated in several ways.
He said, “We the members of the Vanguards of Nigeria’s Democracy, are aware of some clandestine moves made by the APC-led government to probe, investigate, malign and imprison ex-President Jonathan. We are already aware of the trumped-up charges the APC government is levelling against a man who has diligently served the Nigerian state at the highest level of government.
“The APC led government should take notice that the appointments made so far are skewed in favour of the North, as no Ijaw man has been appointed. While an Ijaw President did not discriminate in appointment, President Buhari is implementing a Northern agenda thorough some of the appointments.”
According to him, Buhari unilaterally cancelled the waterway surveillance and security contract awarded to the Delta-born Ijaw businessman, Mr. Government Ekpemupolo (aka Tompolo.)
The group also criticised the sacking of the Director-General of Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, Patrick Ziakede Akpobolokemi and described it as “one of the principal appointments given to the Ijaws of Bayelsa State.”

U-23 team battle Congo in Port Harcourt

Nigeria’s national U-23 team will play Congo on Sunday (today) in the final African U-23 Championship final round, first leg qualifier at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, Port Harcourt.

Team coach, Samson Siasia, is optimistic of a fine performance from his players, despite lamenting his strikers’ wastefulness in front of goal.

Siasia said, “I am very confident that Nigerians will see one of the best displays ever by the U-23 team.

“My players have always created chances, but our greatest problem has been to convert these chances. We have been doing a lot of work in this area and if what I have seen in training is anything to go by, then I can assure Nigerians that these boys will make them proud by scoring enough goals against the Congolese on Sunday.”

The coach expressed confidence in his squad despite the non-availability of most of the overseas-based players invited for the crucial encounter.

Siasia disclosed that he was not caught unawares, saying he had a Plan B, since clubs were not mandated to release players for the qualifier because it was not on the FIFA calendar.

“Clubs in Europe and elsewhere are not obliged to release these players, and that is why we have been concentrating on building the team around home-based professionals,” he added.

However, former Flying Eagles striker, Umar Aminu, made the team, after convincing his club to release him for the game.

IYC faults Obasanjo over comment on Jonathan

The umbrella body of Ijaw youths, the Ijaw Youth Council Worldwide, has berated former President Olusegun Obasanjo over alleged uncomplimentary comment on the immediate past President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan.

Obasanjo had allegedly said while delivering a convocation lecture at Benson Idahosa University, Benin, Edo State, that the perceived failure of Jonathan in office would haunt the people of South-South zone for a long time.

The IYC took exception to the comment, saying that the statement was reckless, baseless and a deliberate effort by Obasanjo to dent former President Jonathan’s towering image in the international community.

The group in a statement on Sunday by its spokesman, Mr. Eric Omare, said Obasanjo’s comment was uncharitable and a calculated attempt to tarnish the reputation of one of their referred illustrious sons, whose records of performance were unparalleled in Nigeria’s political history.

The group said, “The IYC considers the statement as reckless, baseless and a deliberate effort by Obasanjo to dent former President Jonathan’s towering image in the international community.

“As usual, Obasanjo does not want anybody in Nigeria to be greater than he.

” The IYC makes bold to state that former President Jonathan’s five years in office were far better than Obasanjo’s eight years in office. If Obasanjo has forgotten, we wish to remind him that because of his reckless impunity in rigging elections, late President Umaru Yar’Adua on assumption of office had zero regard in the international community.

“However, President Jonathan has redeemed this badly battered image by reforming the electoral system as elections in Nigeria today are substantially free, fair and credible with the consequent goodwill it has generated for Nigeria in the international community.

“President Muhammadu Buhari would not have been receiving the highest respect before President Barrack Obama in the United States now if not for former President Jonathan’s efforts in reforming the electoral system in Nigeria.”

The IYC stated that if there was any region that ought to be haunted by the performance of ex-Nigerian President, it is the South West region as former President Obasanjo’s performance in office was abysmal.

However, it said the South-West was completely exonerated from any blame as they totally rejected Obasanjo in 1999 because they knew very well that nothing good could come out of Obasanjo.

LIONEL MESSI VISITS GABON..... see crowd

Barcelona star Lionel Messi spent a part of his vacation on a visit to Gabon on Saturday where he helped to lay the foundation for a new 20,000-seat stadium in Port-Gentil.

The Argentina captain was a guest of President Ali Bongo Ondimba.

He signed autographs for many joyous fans before he was driven in a presidential convoy to the scene of the foundation laying ceremony.

"When I was in Barcelona a few years ago, I saw Messi and he said he would come to visit me in Libreville," President Bong told media.

"It was a promise which he made to me. He is a man of honour, one who has kept his word. The calendar worked out well and it has corresponded with the laying of the first stone," the Gabonese leader added.

Port-Gentil, Gabon’s second biggest city, will be home to matches during the 2017 Afcon. Gabon co-hosted the 2012 tournament with Equatorial Guinea.

They would hope to do better than the quarter final finish from the last time.
