Pastor Rapes 13 yrs old

The Nasarawa State Police command on Monday arrested a 46 year-old pastor, Ifeanyi Bernard, for allegedly raping a 13-year-old girl in the Karu Local Government Area of the state.

According to police authorities, the alleged rape took place on November 3 when the pastor was performing deliverance on the teenager.

However, the pastor described the incident as the handiwork of the devil.

While parading the suspect at the Criminal Investigative Department, the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Sani Mohammed, said the suspect was apprehended following a report by the father of the victim, Mr. Martins Ijiwo.

According to the police, the cleric, who lives in the Alikima Mararaba area of the state, lured the victim into his house under the pretext of casting out demons from her.

The police boss said the cleric allegedly pushed her to his bed and raped her repeatedly.

The commissioner said the suspect threatened to kill the victim if she reported the incident to any member of her family.

However, when the father of the girl learnt of the incident, he reported the matter to the police. The police subsequently stormed the pastor’s home and arrested him.

Policemen also recovered bottles of anointing oil from the suspect’s home as well as a bedspread.

The CP said, “The pastor took advantage of his closeness to the girl’s family – who are members of his congregation – to rape their 13-year-old daughter under the guise of casting out demons from her.”

While speaking with our correspondent at the police command, the pastor confessed to the crime, adding that he didn’t know what came over him when he committed the crime.

He said, “I had been into evangelism for some years now and I have been casting out demons from people who have spiritual and family problems before I met this young girl through her father, Mr. Martins Ijiwo.

“I have been a friend of the family for quite some time.

“I used my anointing oil to lure her into my room and all of a sudden, I was carried away and before I knew what was happening, I saw myself making love to her.”

Meanwhile, the police have also arrested four suspects for allegedly kidnapping a Taiwanese, Mr. Chew Williams, on October 6.

“We collected the sum of N7m from the Taiwanese before releasing him,” the suspects said.

It was learnt, however, that the police were only able to recover N750, 000 from the suspects

Nigeria U-17 Captain happy with team performance

Captain of Nigeria’s U-17 team, Kelechi Nwakali, has expressed his excitement over the team’s defence of the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup title in Chile.

Nwakali said he was happy with his Golden Ball award at the competition, which ended on Sunday.

The Golden Eaglets became the second team to successfully defend their U-17 title defeating Mali 2-0 in the second all-Africa final in the history of the tournament. They had won the title in 2013 and successfully defended it in 2015. Brazil were the first team to do so. They were champions in 1997 and 1999.

“I thank God for the opportunity to win this award, it means so much. Playing in the final is the dream of every young player. To play in a World Cup final and win the trophy is amazing. Not just winning it, but defending it,” Nwakali told FIFA.com.

The attacking midfielder, who also won the tournament’s Bronze Shoe, attributed the team’s success in Chile to hard work.

“Right from the game against the USA, when we arrived in Chile, our aim was to defend the trophy. We believed the only way we could do this was hard work. We approached each game with hard work and seriousness. Any team that came to Chile worked for it.

“We believed that when it came to U-17 level, the teams have been there and are worth it. Even though we have to come from behind in a match, we knew we had to work hard, that is our philosophy.”

Also, Nwakali’s teammate, Victor Osimhen, became the record highest goalscorer of the competition after his first goal of the final. The Nigerian scored 10 goals in Chile 2015 to beat the previous records of nine goals set by Frenchman Sinama Pongolle and Ivorian Souleymane Coulibaly in 2001 and 2011.

The forward, who also won the Silver Ball, expressed his happiness at the achievement.

“I want to thank coach Emmanuel Amuneke for what he has impacted in us and I’m also grateful to my teammates who helped me to break the record,” Osimhen was quoted as saying by thenff.com.

“The Golden Boot is also dedicated to my sister, who just had a baby girl.”

Buhari Fires a Rat in the house.. EFCC Boss..

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday fired the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mr. Ibrahim Lamorde, thus bringing his reign as the country’s anti-graft tsar to an end amid fraud allegations.

The President called the EFCC boss into Aso Rock Presidential Villa and told him that his time was up, The PUNCH learnt.

Lamorde’s sacking came few weeks to the end of his four-year tenure. He would have completed his four-year term later this month.

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, in a two-paragraph statement, said Lamorde would be proceeding on terminal leave ahead of the expiration of his four-year tenure in February 2016.

The statement read, “President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the appointment of Mr. Ibrahim Mustafa Magu as the Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission .

“Mr. Magu, who is an Assistant Commissioner of Police, is to take over from Mr. Ibrahim Lamorde who is proceeding on terminal leave ahead of the formal expiration of his tenure in February next year.”

The sacked EFCC boss had met behind closed-doors with the President shortly after the latter inaugurated the new National Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, and five INEC national commissioners.

It was during the meeting that Buhari reportedly told Lamorde to vacate office as the anti-graft commission’s chair.

Lamorde did not speak with reporters at the end of the encounter.

Lamorde recently hit the headlines when a security expert, George Uboh, accused the EFCC boss of allegedly diverting N1trn in cash and properties said to have been recovered from convicted looters.

In the main, Uboh accused Lamorde of diverting proceeds accruable from the sale of properties recovered from a now-late former governor of Bayelsa State, Diepreye Alamieyesiegha; and former Inspector-General of Police, Tafa Balogun, among many others.

The Ministry of Justice recently directed the EFCC to probe Lamorde over the allegations but the House of Representatives countered the order and instead said the police and the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related Offences Commission should handle the investigation.

The House’s directive followed public consternation and condemnations by lawyers of the inappropriateness of an agency accused along with Lamorde to handle the probe.

The ex-EFCC boss is also under probe by the Senate.

The upper chamber’s Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions however on Monday announced the indefinite postponement of Lamorde’s probe. The probe had been scheduled to proceed on Tuesday (today).

The Clerk to the committee,   Mr. Freedom Osolo, in a press release in Abuja, failed to give reasons for the postponement.

The statement read in part, “I regret to inform you that the hearing of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions, slated for Tuesday, 10th November, 2015, has been postponed for the time being.

“You will be duly informed when the meeting is rescheduled, please. The committee regrets any inconveniences the postponement would have caused you.”

Osolo had on Thursday, November 4, issued a statement that the committee would hold a public hearing with all petitioners and those they petitioned on Tuesday (November 10), by 2:00pm at the Meeting Room, 120, New Senate Building, National Assembly, Abuja.

The Chairman of the committee, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, who had earlier confirmed to The PUNCH on Friday that Lamorde would appear before the panel on Tuesday, failed to give reasons for the postponement, when contacted on the telephone.

“I am in Lagos for an oversight function and I need to know the true position,” Anyanwu said to one of our correspondents.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan had on November 23, 2011, named Lamorde as the EFCC acting chairman after sacking his predecessor, Mrs. Farida Waziri.

His appointment was later confirmed by the Senate on February 15, 2012.

The PUNCH had reported exclusively in October that Buhari had ruled out the possibility of giving Lamorde a second term in office.

Meanwhile, mixed reactions greeted Lamorde’s sacking on Monday. Some lawyers said that investigation into allegations against   Lamorde must continue despite his removal from office while others said the ex-EFCC boss was a victim of corrupt powerful Nigerians.

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Dr. Joseph Nwobike, said though Lamorde did his best while in office, another anti-graft agency such as the ICPC should investigate the allegations against him.

Nwobike said, “I think he has tried his best. But be that as it may, another agent of government charged with criminal investigation such as the ICPC should go ahead to investigate the allegations against him and prosecute him if he is found to be culpable like any other Nigerian. But there must be regard to his rights as provided for in the constitution.”

A former chairman of the Ikeja branch of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mr. Onyekachi Ubani, also called for investigations into many “unproved” allegations against the former EFCC boss.

Ubani said, “The speculation about his removal has been in the air for some time. There are a lot of unproved allegations against him. There is also an allegation that he did not fight corruption under the previous administration of President Goodluck Jonathan and that he suddenly woke up under the present administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.

“But let it be that the Presidency has complied with all the legal requirements before relieving him of his appointment which is tenured.”

Another SAN, Emeka Ngige, said Lamorde could not achieve much in the fight against corruption because he was appointed by a “corrupt” administration.

He added that there must be an investigation into the allegation against him “despite that it was levelled by an ex-convict.”

The Executive Director, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, Adetokunbo Mumuni, said, “What I think should happen further is that investigation into the stories making the rounds must be pursued and the outcome be made public. If indeed Lamorde has committed any offence, subsequently he should be made to face prosecution to see whether he will be able to defend himself before the appropriate court of law. And if he is found guilty, he should face the consequences.

“If the system has tolerated him up till this point, why wouldn’t they give him the couple of days before the expiration of his tenure?”

The Chairman, the Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders, Mr. Debo Adeniran, said, “One thing that such sacking would engender is the fear of good people serving at anti-corruption or regulatory agencies as chairman or head. It has been established that when you fight corruption, corruption fights back and these corrupt elements are ruthless if they have to fight back.’’

The Chairman, Civil Society Network Against Corruption, Mr. Lanre Suraj, also expressed dissatisfaction over the sacking of Lamorde just days before the expiration of his tenure as the EFCC chairman, more so when he had not been found guilty of any wrongdoing in spite of the allegations against him.

Suraj said rather than humiliate him with a sack, he could have been asked to proceed on a terminal leave, while another leader would be shopped for the agency.

In Suraj’s view, the anti-corruption war in Nigeria can neither be effective nor be sustained where the leaders of the anti-corruption agencies are subjected to summary dismissal.

A Lagos-based lawyer, Mr. Wahab Shittu, said, “I have no comment on the sack of Ibrahim Lamorde except to say that the government has its prerogative to decide who it would make the EFCC chairman. I think it is in line to thank Mr. Lamorde for the service rendered to the country and also wish for the best in terms of who will take his place.”

WHY YOU MUST LEARN A TRADE.. SEE MORE

The vice-chancellor, Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijagun, Ijebu Ode, Prof. Oluyemisi Obilade, has said those in charge of education policies must de-emphasise policies which produce only white-collar job seekers, and place emphasis on vocational education, which produces employers of labour.

She said this on Monday while briefing journalists on the institution’s forthcoming 10th anniversary and its combined 6th and 7th convocation.

She said currently Nigeria’s education system still produced more job seekers than job providers, and this lapse she said TASUED has been able to tackle, by offering their students vocational skills as well.

She said, “In Nigeria, we place wrong attitude in our youths. We place so much emphasis on producing youths that go looking  for white collar jobs after graduation.

“But here in TASUED, we have reversed that. We have established the Centre for the Entrepreneurship and Vocational Studies, to further equip the students against unemployment challenges in the country.

“The uniqueness of TASUED is that our graduates are issued two different certificates; one in their primary course of study and the other in vocational skills.”

EDO STATE PLEDGE SUPPORT FOR THE RUFIN

The Edo Government has pledged support for the Rural Finance Institution Building programme to ensure availability of funds for rural dwellers in the state.

Mr Joe Okojie, the state Commissioner for Agriculture, made the promise in Benin on Tuesday when RUFIN’s Leader of 11th Supervision Mission, Mr Swandip Sahin, ‎visited the state.

The commissioner said the government was mapping out strategies to take ownership of the programme when the project was over.

According to him, Edo is an agrarian society where more than 67 per cent of the residents had something to do with agricultural activities.

According to him, the state government is putting in place measures that would boost agricultural production, especially in the rural areas.

He said, “RUFIN is a programme through which help and relief can be given to people at the grassroots.

“That is why when I took over office, I took interest in the project and I made it‎ my project.

“I am doing my best so that, we as a government will fulfill our own end of the project.

“I promise you that we will do the needful and will do more to take ownership of the programme when RUFIN is gone.

“My hope is that, going forward, we will have better synergy so that we are able to deliver on our promises.”

Earlier, RUFIN’s Deputy National Project Coordinator, Mrs Unekwu Ufaruna, said the programme was targeted at building informal rural financial institutions, and linking them to formal micro finance institutions to access loans without collateral.

She said RUFIN had formed 700 village savings and credit groups also known as ‘Esusu’ mainly made up of women.

Ufaruna said the programme was working with seven Micro Finance Institutions in the state, through which N1.2‎bn had been disbursed as loans to rural farmers, since its inception.

She said at the beginning of RUFIN Edo Government was regular at paying counterpart financing
