The vice-chancellor, Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijagun, Ijebu Ode, Prof. Oluyemisi Obilade, has said those in charge of education policies must de-emphasise policies which produce only white-collar job seekers, and place emphasis on vocational education, which produces employers of labour.
She said this on Monday while briefing journalists on the institution’s forthcoming 10th anniversary and its combined 6th and 7th convocation.
She said currently Nigeria’s education system still produced more job seekers than job providers, and this lapse she said TASUED has been able to tackle, by offering their students vocational skills as well.
She said, “In Nigeria, we place wrong attitude in our youths. We place so much emphasis on producing youths that go looking for white collar jobs after graduation.
“But here in TASUED, we have reversed that. We have established the Centre for the Entrepreneurship and Vocational Studies, to further equip the students against unemployment challenges in the country.
“The uniqueness of TASUED is that our graduates are issued two different certificates; one in their primary course of study and the other in vocational skills.”
