Journalists’ assault: NUJ demands apology from FUTA workers

PETER DADA
The Ondo State chapter of the Nigerian Union of Journalists has condemned alleged assault on five journalists by some workers of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, describing it as barbaric.

Six journalists were on Friday attacked by members of the three labour unions (the Non-Academic Staff Union, the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities and the National Association of Academic Technologists) in FUTA during a protest by the workers.
The journalists attacked were Peter Dada, Hakeem Gbadamosi, Leke Akeredolu, Dayo Johnson, Babatope Okeowo and Seun Akingboye.
In a statement jointly signed by the chairman of the union, James Sowole, and the General Secretary, Leke Adegbite, the NUJ said it was unacceptable for anyone to attack journalists.
The statement read, “The NUJ demands an unreserved public apology from the leadership of the three unions at FUTA to compensate for the unwarranted assault of journalists on the campus of the institution on Friday, when the university’s unions’ members, led by the SSANU chairman, Mr. Dele Durojaye, assaulted and ordered reporters out of the campus.”
