Success Nwogu, Ilorin
A professor of Yoruba at the University of Ilorin, Olalere Adeyemi, has said that about 5,000 languages, including Yoruba, which are spoken in Africa, are going into extinction.
He stated that the languages were going into extinction due to the dearth of books on them.
He spoke on Sunday, in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, during the public presentation of a book, Omolabake,written by a Yoruba teacher, Hajia Khadijat Yusuf.
The chairman of the occasion, Dr. Yinka Yahaya, said the Yoruba Language must not be allowed to go into extinction.
The author of the book appealed to stakeholders to preserve African languages.
She said, “Our language, our culture and our heritage are our source and strength, but they are unattended to. This is one of the factors that gave birth to Omolabake. It is our hope that copies of the novel will go round all academic institutions.”
