Police hunt gang for beheading DSP

The Police in Rivers say they are tracking more persons suspected to be involved in the beheading of a Deputy Superintendent of Police, Muhammed Alkali, and his driver in Port Harcourt.

The spokesman of the Rivers Command of the police, DSP Nnamdi Omoni, said in Port Harcourt on Tuesday that the persons earlier arrested had given them useful information.

Omoni said the arrest of the suspects would help the police in the murder case.

A group of bandits suspected to be cultists had ambushed a police patrol team in Ujju community near Omoku in Ogba Egbema/Ndoni LGA of the state, beheaded a DSP and his orderly.

Alkali, who was attached to Mobile Police Unit 48, and his driver were on routine duty during the just concluded Rivers legislative re-run election, when they were attacked and killed by members of the cult.

He said, “Members of the gang, who are on the run will soon be arrested.

“The Police Special Intelligence Response Unit has made a major breakthrough toward apprehending the remaining members of the group.

“We will inform the media at the end of our investigation.”

Omoni, however, failed to confirm the arrest of one of the kingpins of the cult that beheaded the late Alkali.
A senior police officer said, on condition of anonymity, that when the suspect was arrested, he was found to be in possession of the slain DSP’s mobile phone.

According to the source, the suspect was arrested while on his way to see a female friend in Omoku town.

The source explained that the kingpin and his members attacked Alkali and his driver because they felt the police took sides with a major political party in the election against their own party.

Five other suspects were on December 15 arrested by the police in connection with the gruesome murder of Alkali and his driver.
